The Elephant in the Room

▪️It's the second last month of the year i.e. November. It is known for many things like Thanksgiving, No Shave November, No Nut November etc which are viral over internet. Most of us are only aware of trends but not the reason or thought behind it.

▪️Few such things which need to be revisited again are No Shave November or Movember campaign. We all know for a fact that men abstain from shaving or grooming their facial hair and grow moustache and beard the entire month.

▪️Tracing back to their origins , Movember was initially started by two men in 2003 on a whim to bring back the moustache fashion. It was later converted into a campaign raising the awareness and conversation about cancers (Prostate & Testicular cancer) and Mental health in Men. Similarly , No Shave November was started in 2009 to raise awareness for the same reasons started above.

▪️Men are challenged to grow their facial hair in a wild and free way with minimal to no trimming. This is something that cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy aren't able to do so,  indirectly raising the awareness about them.

▪️ Another spin to it is, at the end of the month, the facial hair is donated to these cancer patients. The money saved by not using razors is also donated to the fund dedicated for these cancer & mental health patients.

▪️World Health Organization defines health as " a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity." While we may have overcome many diseases affecting physical health, We haven't even acknowledged the fast growing epidemic of mental health issues, especially targeting the millennials and the generations thereafter.

▪️ Today is 19th of November, known for International Men’s Day. This day is to promote positive male role models; not just movie stars and sports men but everyday, working-class men who are living decent, honest lives and to celebrate men's positive contributions to society, community, family, marriage, child care, and the environment.

▪️ This year's theme for International Men's Day is "ZERO MALE SUICIDE." Society expects men to be strong, be the provider for the family and not show his emotions. Consequently, today we have many men who are failing, trying to live up to the above said expectations, who don't open up emotionally, are victims of either Substance Abuse or Social media, are lonely and/or socially awkward.

▪️ Let's acknowledge the elephant in the room and try to be more supportive and available to each other physically, mentally, emotionally besides being in their friend's list.
