The ceremony of Holika Dahan is observed on the full moon night in the month of Phalguna . The mutation period of winter and spring, induces the growth of bacteria in the atmosphere as well as in the body. When Holika is burnt, temperature rises to higher degrees. Following the tradition when people perform Parikrama (circumambulation or going around) around the fire, the heat from the fire kills the bacteria in the body thus, cleansing it.  People also add camphor in Holika Dahan as it destroys the viruses. India being an agricultural country, flourishes with the wheat crop by this time of the year. As the season changes, leaves fall. So the devotees light a big fire where all the waste is burnt. The ripe wheat is roasted in the same fire & distributed among each other. The word “ Shiva ” literally means “ that which is not .”  “ That which is ,” is existence and creation .  “ That which is not ” is Shiva .  It means, when you open your eyes and look around, if your vision is for small things, you will see lots of creation.  If your vision is really looking for big things, you will see the biggest presence in the existence is a vast emptiness . A few spots which we call galaxies are generally much noticed, but the vast emptiness that holds them does not come into everybody’s notice. This vastness, this unbounded emptiness , is what is referred to as Shiva .  Today, modern science also proves that everything comes from nothing and goes back to nothing.
