Spiritual Significance Of Lighting a Diya

  • Most of the traditional practices have a scientific and spiritual explanation. One such practice is lighting a Diya. The Body of the Diya is made of Clay and has a Cotton Wick and Oil.

  • Clay Body = Physical Body made from the 5 elements of nature (Pancha Bhuta).

  • Ghee/Oil = Negative emotions

Cotton Wick = Ego

Fire = Spiritual Knowledge/God

  • Just like how Light dispels away the Darkness, when lit by Spiritual knowledge, the negative energies and the ego too finally perishes, thereby removing our ignorance.

  • The flame of the Diya always burns upwards. Similarly, we should acquire such knowledge as to take us towards higher goals. This is also similar to the Kundalini awakening, where activated energy travels from below upwards.

  • "To summarize, we have become ignorant of the fact that all are spiritual souls to begin with. During our life in this world, we have become attached to the perishable physical body and are filled with a lot of negative energies or emotions/ego. When we realize this, we strive to get rid of all those negative energies enabling our spiritual growth."

  • Thus, lighting a Diya daily helps us to inculcate such mindset besides many other benefits.
